Coed Apartments
MIT Graduate Housing has traditionally had only single-sex apartments with the exception of Ashdown suites, which are mainly co-ed. For the 2007-2008 school year Tang Hall and Edgerton House allowed residents to request to be in co-ed 2-bedroom apartments. When Ashdown House moves to it's new building in the fall of 2008, it's two- and three-bedroom apartments and suites will also be allowed to be coed upon request.
I'm a current resident of Edgerton, how do I request a particular apartment-mate?
For those residents of Edgerton House who have assignments continuing into the Fall term, Edgerton holds an annual in-house lottery in early May for those students to choose rooms. This lottery is announced and administrated by the House Government. Through this lottery there will be a way to indicate that you wish to live with someone in particular. If the House can accommodate the request, that is, if there is an available 2-bedroom apartment for the two of you to live in together, they will accommodate it.
Throughout the rest of the year the Graduate Housing Office maintains a waiting list of residents who wish to change rooms in Edgerton House. You may come in to the office and fill out a transfer request form, and we will let you know if we are able to accommodate your request during the year. We must have a request in writing from both parties to be able to make an intentional roommate assignment, regardless of gender.
I'm a current resident of Tang, how do I request an apartment-mate?
At this time the Tang Hall Government has decided not to have an in-house lottery for students who have assignments continuing into the Fall term to choose rooms. If you wish to switch apartments for the Fall Term, please send email to graduatehousing@mit.edu between May 1 and May 18th requesting a new assignment. We must have a request in writing from both parties to be able to make an intentional apartment-mate assignment, regardless of gender.
Students who wish to switch rooms or apartments in Tang Hall at any time through the year may come to the Graduate Housing Office and fill out a transfer request form indicating who they wish to live with. When an opening comes available, the Housing Office will try to fill your request.
I'm entering the Fall Housing Allocation to get an assignment, how do I request a particular apartment-mate?
The request process is the same for both coed and single-sex requests. Both parties should include each other's name and MIT ID number in the roommate request portion of their housing application. We must have a request in writing from both parties to be able to make an intentional roommate or apartment-mate assignment, regardless of gender.
Requesting a specific roommate does not change your chances in the Allocation and does not guarantee that you will be assigned to the same apartment type.
From Fall Housing Allocation Application

How are Housing Allocation apartment-mate requests fulfilled?
If both parties receive an assignment to the same room-type in the same building, we will do our best to accommodate your request. During the 2007-2008 school year, coed requests can only be accommodated in 2-bedroom apartments in Edgerton and Tang Hall.
Starting with the 2008-2009 school year Ashdown (NW35) 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom apartments will also be co-ed. All other Graduate Housing apartments are single sex.
Please keep in mind that, while the majority of requests can be met, there are some limitations. The buildings do not empty out completely over the summer; therefore we are only able to assign people where there is vacancy. For coed assignments, this means that there must be a completely empty 2-bedroom apartment (or 3-bedroom apartment in Ashdown) available for you and your friend to move in to.
Can couples live in coed apartments in Single Housing?
Single housing is intended for use by single graduate students, however the Housing Office will not ask, nor check, whether you are married, in a committed relationship, or otherwise involved. If two members of a couple are assigned to the same roomtype in the same building, they may ask to be assigned as apartment-mates. They will each have their own license for their assigned room in the apartment and will each be responsible for the full house fees associated with their assignment. If a couple is interested in living with other couples and families, they should look at the options for Family Housing.
What if I don't want an apartment-mate of the opposite sex?
Coed assignments are made by mutual request only. No one will be assigned an apartment-mate of the opposite sex if they did not request a specific person as their apartment-mate. |
