Tang Residence Hall is located at the west end of campus, with a view of the Charles River, Boston, Cambridge and the MIT campus. It is a 24-story tower that is a 15-minute walk to the main entrance of MIT. It houses 404 single graduate men and women in apartments.

Living arrangements in Tang Residence Hall are in shared apartments. Each resident is assigned their own bedroom within the apartment and shares the kitchen, living room and bathroom. There are three types of apartments in Tang: two-bedroom for two students, three-bed room for three students and four-bedroom for four. In the two-bedroom units, there is no living room and each person is assigned their own bedroom and shares the kitchen and bathroom. In the three- and four-bedroom units, each resident shares the kitchen, bathroom and living room. It provides residents with the privacy of apartment living without the need for transportation to and from the Institute. Tang Residence Hall is coed, but individual thre- and four-bedroom apartments are single sex. Tang Hall is pariticpating in a pilot of gender neutral housing in their two-bedroom apartments where residents make request a specific roommate without regard to gender. All bedrooms and living rooms are furnished, but you must provide linens, kitchen utensils and study lamps. The bedrooms are funished with a twin bed long, desk, chair, 5 drawer dresser and built in closet. The living room is furnished with a sofa, chair, coffee table, a dining table and four chairs.

Common facilities include two recreation rooms, lounges, an equipped exercise room, music practice room with a Steinway piano, cookout areas and storage. Equipment such as volleyball nets, a VCR, and vacuum cleaners are available for use by the residents.

The faculty in residence, Larry and Dawn Anderson, provide a sense of community and many opportunities for residents to meet one another and to become better acquainted with MIT. They are invaluable as sources of advice and counsel to individuals, both personally and academically.
