Summer Housing / Sublicensing

Our first priority is to house all fully-registered graduate students. If there is space remaining in the single graduate residence halls we will then make Visitor assignments to non-student MIT affiliates as well as 9th term undergraduates.

Unfortunately, there is no on-campus family housing available to visitors. The demand among our students is extremely high, leaving no apartments to make available to others. Visitors coming to MIT with a spouse and/or children should contact the MIT Off-Campus Housing Office (http://web.mit.edu/housing/och/index.html, 617-253-1493).

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Visitor assignment, you must be affiliated with MIT in an official capacity. All visitors are required to provide documentation verifying their affiliation. Examples of visitors are cross-registered, special, and visiting students, postdocs, and visiting professors, researchers, and lecturers.

If you meet the above requirements and need housing beginning in Fall 2009, you are eligible to apply to the Fall Visitor Waiting List. The waiting list will open on July 1, 2009. Beginning July 1, applications will be available on the Graduate Housing website at http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/.

If you meet the above requirements and need housing after January 1, 2009 you are eligible to apply to the Graduate Housing Spring Allocation. Beginning November 2, 2009, applications for the spring allocation will be available on the Graduate Housing website at http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/. If you miss the spring allocation you can apply to the waiting list for spring housing starting on November 30, 2009.

Assignment Length

All visitor assignments expire on August 15 of the year in which you are assigned.  If you need housing beyond August 15, you must to apply to another waiting list in the summer. Please note that it is very difficult for visitors to get housing at that time. The opening of the waiting list for Fall 2009 assignments is July 1.

Priority will be given to visitors who are able to fulfill the entire term of the assignment. Your chances for an assignment decrease if you will not need your assignment through the spring of 2010.

If you do not want to move to a new assignment or to an off-campus apartment in August, you may want to consider finding off-campus accommodations for your stay at MIT.  We have an Off-Campus Housing Office that can assist you (http://web.mit.edu/housing/och/index.html, 617-253-1493).

Room-Type Options / Availability

Because our first priority is to house fully-registered graduate students, it is nearly impossible for visitors to be assigned to efficiencies or 1-bedroom apartments, our most popular living options.  If these are the only types of assignments you are interested in, it is highly unlikely that you will receive an assignment.

Most of our visitors are assigned to shared apartment accommodations in Tang or Sidney-Pacific.  Sometimes we are able to assign visitors to our other options as well, so feel free to apply for them. Details on all of the graduate residence halls, including rents and floorplans, can be found at http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/residences.html.

Terminating Assignment Before August 15

Visitors can sometimes terminate their assignments early, however there are strict procedures that must be followed to avoid extra charges. Terminating at the wrong time of year can cost you a lot of money!

First of all, residents are responsible for rent for the entire month in which they are moving out. For example, if you are leaving MIT on April 10, you will still pay rent for the entire month of April.

You are also required to submit your termination request at least 30 days before your termination date. Another example: To terminate for April 30, you must submit your request by March 31.

If you terminate your assignment in any of the following months: February, March, June, July, September, or October, you will be charged a termination fee equal to one month of rent.

For further details about the termination policies, please go to http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/ghg/gettingout.html.

Summer or Winter Housing / Sublicensing

If you need housing on May 14 or later, you may sublicense a room on-campus from a current resident. Again, you must provide proof of MIT affiliation to the Graduate Housing Office, but details of the sublicense are arranged between you and the student. The sublicense period ends on September 13. Winter sublicensing dates are December 11, 2009 to February 7, 2010.

Visitors with families may sublicense family housing apartments in Eastgate and Westgate.

Please note: Sublicensing is only permitted during the summer and IAP (January). It is strictly prohibited during the academic year.

A listing of available sublicenses is posted at http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/sublet/sublet-list.html.

Efficiency apartments in The Warehouse (NW30) are also available for students to rent on a Nightly, Weekly, or Monthly basis between June 15 and August 15. For more information about Warehouse rates and accommodations, please send email to residence@mit.edu or call (617) 253-1530.
