Belmont

The town of Belmont is located west of Boston, sharing boundaries with Watertown to the south, Cambridge to the east, Arlington to the north and Waltham and Lexington to the west. Single family homes are the most common housing type in this pleasant residential suburb. Of the 6,806 households in the town, 2,246 are multi-family dwellings (ie: two or three family houses, apartments or larger units). Some single family homes offer furnished room rentals to accommodate the influx of academics to the area universities. The quality of housing in Belmont is high. The school system is among the best in New England and the town offers the use of sports and recreational facilities to residents and families for a nominal fee. Adult Education programs are offered to town residents at the High School (English as a Second Language is one of the classes). Town services (police, rubbish removal, emergency vehicles, fire response) are of high quality. A main library and two branch libraries serve the three major areas of the town.

Belmont retains its small New England town appeal. In an area of only four square miles it has four separate shopping areas, all accessible by public transit. Public transit to MIT consists of two buses to connect to the Harvard Square red line. #73 Waverly bus travels along the Belmont-Watertown line and the #74 Belmont bus travels along Concord Avenue. Service is frequent and safe. Safety in the town is a factor that draws most of its residents. Proximity to Boston, the Mass. Pike,. Route 2 and the Alewife red line subway station offer additional appeal to residents who drive. Parking facilities are usually provided for residents since the town does not allow overnight street parking. Be sure to check the parking situation before agreeing to rent an apartment.

Beaver Brook Reservation (a State Park and Recreational Area) and two country clubs with acres of trees and greens and the presence of two ponds enhance the ambience and tranquility of Belmont located 4.5 miles from MIT.
