MIT Owned Off-Campus Apartments for Graduate Students
and Affiliates

MIT owns property in a variety of locations in Cambridge and Somerville that are primarily for Graduate Studetns. Currently, the supply exceeds the demand and these are now open to affiliates of MIT also. The majority of the vacancies occur in roommate situations, but we receive between 10 and 30 one and two bedroom units per year. At the present time, there is no waiting list. All apartments are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

General Policy:

  • All apartments and roommate situations are for graduate students or affiliates of MIT only. Spouses and partners are welcome. These are not intended for extended family members such as parents, siblings, etc.
  • All roommate and apartment vacancies must be posted in the Off Campus Housing Service a minimum of one week before any approvals will be issued.
  • All new tenants moving into the condos at Fulkerson St and Thorndike St will be required to pay a $200 move-in/out fee to the condo association.
  • The final decision on who moves in is up to the remaining roommates as long as the replacement is a graduate student or affiliate of MIT. The remaining roommates must approve new roommate in writing
  • All new roommates and people moving in to a one or two bedroom apt. will be required to obtain an approval form from Off Campus Housing. They must bring their MIT ID and, in the case of new roommates, a letter from the remaining roommates indicating their approval of the replacement

Procedures:
  • The final decision rests with the MIT Real Estate Office, the Codman Company and the Off Campus Housing Service to determine the final and appropriate use of each vacancy.
  • All tenants either moving in or renewing their leases must obtain approval forms from Off Campus Housing in order to verify eligibility.
  • All tenants are to sign a one year lease that cannot be revoked or cancelled. If someone vacates prior to the end of their lease, they are responsible for the rent until an eligible replacement is located. If someone's affiliation ends prior to the end of the lease, they are still responsible for the rent until a new eligible replacement is located, and they may remain in the apartment until the end of the current lease.
  • All people residing in this property must be on the lease
