After submitting a Housing Change Request Form, your name is added to a waiting list for the building(s) that you requested. All requests are satisfied in a date applied order and when space becomes available. Request are often satisfied mid-semester. When this occurs, our office will email the student and he/she has 3 days in which to make a decision as to whether or not to take the offer. In these 3 days, the student can contact the room assignment chair(s) to see what the room entails in order to make the most informed decision possible.
Mid-semester assignments:
Housing reassignments are done in two separate ways throughout the year. For most of the year, we offer spaces out to the top person on the waiting list when a space becomes available. At those times, the student has the option to accept the offer, decline the offer and be removed from the waiting list or, forward his or her request to the following term.
Housing Switch Lotteries: April and December
In order to increase liquidity in the system, there are two housing switch lotteries that occur at the end of each semester for an assignment effective the following semester. In December there is a lottery for Spring, and in April there is a lottery for the upcoming Fall. If you are reassigned in the housing switch lottery, you MUST accept that assignment and move. There is no provision in the lottery to decline its results; the very possibility of a transfer in the lottery depends on students respecting their commitments to move. The housing switch lotteries are for students who currently live in an MIT Undergraduate Residence Hall.
Please submit a housing switch application to enter into the April lottery.
Students currently on Leave of Absence:
Students who are currently on leave from the Institute may submit a housing request at anytime. However, the housing request application will not be processed until the student is officially readmitted through the Student Support Services(s3) Office . The s3 office will send a list of students who have been readmitted from leave of absence, withdrawal, etc.
Students currently Living Off-Campus:
Students who currently live off-campus are assigned in date applied order and as space becomes available. Off-Campus students are not included in the Housing Switch Lotteries which occur in December and April.
