For Students Participating In A Study Abroad Program
Housing Policies For Students On Study Abroad

A student’s eligibility for residence in approved Institute Houses terminates at the close of his or her eighth semester registered at MIT (excluding summer terms), or upon graduation or termination of student status at MIT, whichever comes first. Terms on Junior Year Away, Domestic Year Away, and Co-op are also counted toward those eight terms.

Return housing into the residence hall system is guaranteed to students who are returning from an approved program away, but a specific House is not guaranteed. ***

***We try our best to place students back to the building from which they left, however, we ask that when filling out the Housing Request Form a student indicates at least two preference in case the 1st cannot be accommodated.

The Process

All students who participate in a MIT sponsored Study Abroad Program are guaranteed housing if they so choose upon the semester that they return.  We do ask that students follow the following procedure:

1.  Cancellation:  Upon confirmation of Study Abroad, the student will need to cancel his/her housing by submitting the following forms:

2.  Requesting Housing For Return to MIT:  We ask that simultaneous to submitting a Cancellation or Confirmation Form that students submit a Housing Request Form at http://web.mit.edu/housing/undergrad/application.html for the semester they will be returning.  We will keep this on file and use it to place you back in housing upon return.

We try our best to place students back to the building from which they left and are able to do this in most cases*

*In the event that there are no spaces in the building you have left from, we ask that when filling out the Housing Request Form you indicate at least two preferences in case the 1st cannot be accommodated.

Students who return from a Study Abroad, who have requested housing back into Undergraduate Housing, will be given assignments to the building via email:

If a student is returning for the Spring Term:  Mid-Late December

If a student is returning for the Fall Term:  Mid-Late April
