Job Description

A high level description of general responsibilities associated with a broad, generic job. It describes a collection of positions with common attributes and similar tasks.

Position Title

The specific title (name) given to a specific role. This is the title commonly used within the department, sometimes it is a specific title used in community practice. People often use this title on business cards.

Examples:

Administrative: Biology AO

SRS: MIT-France Program Coordinator

Position
Description

A detailed description of the specific duties and responsibilities associated with a specific position; i.e., Position Descriptions clearly define the unique tasks, responsibilities, and activities of a role. Position Descriptions also includes the broader tasks defined in a Job Description.

A Position Description details the specifics of the role; e.g. in one area an AO position may have many financial responsibilities because there is no additional finance position but in another area an AO has minimal financial responsibility because there is a separate finance position.

Posting
Description

The "Posting" Description is used to recruit for a Position. Typically, this is a shortened version of the Position Description and what is used to advertise when filling a Position. It highlights the positions most important duties and responsibilities.
