Job Families
The “job family” concept is a way to organize related jobs and is particularly useful when job titles are inconsistent and/or vary as much as they do at MIT. Job families can be used by managers, staff and Human Resources to:
- Assist in clarifying the need for specific training in order to enhance one’s skills and prepare for potential career advancement,
- Define career development opportunities for staff, either within their current Job Family or to another Job Family,
- Facilitate career planning discussions between staff and managers at any point during the year,
- Assist with MIT’s ability to comply with mandated affirmative action reporting, job applicant tracking, and associated data analysis
- Facilitate accurate market pricing through greater understanding of job content and job requirements, and
- Ensure more consistency in job evaluation through the comparison of similar jobs within the same Job Family.
Placing jobs into job families will not in any way affect the current grading of jobs or the pay of individuals. It will:
- Assist managers as they discuss development opportunities with staff,
- Assist staff when they consider course enrollment and career advancement, and
- Assist the Compensation Office in the future when department managers have questions regarding internal equity and/or external competitiveness.
