Overview of Leaves

Types of Leaves Description Eligibility Maximum Duration
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) Provides unpaid job-protected and benefit-protected leave for purposes of giving birth, adoption, care for ill family member or employee's own serious health condition. Must be employed by the Institute for at least one year and working 50% or more of a normal schedule. 12 weeks per (rolling) calendar year.

Sick Leave for Support Staff

Support staff employee accrues 12 days of sick leave per year to be used in cases of accident or illness of the employee, and medical or dental examination and care. Sick days are credited on the employee's anniversary date of each year. Unused time rolls over from year to year.

Based on employee need and available sick leave balance.
Extended Sick Leave (ESL) for Support Staff The Extended Sick Leave Policy provides an extension of income for those occasions when an accident or serious illness causes absence beyond an individual's reserve paid sick leave. All regular employees paid on the Support Staff payroll, who are scheduled to work at least half time, become eligible for the Extended Sick Leave Plan following employment at the Institute for one full year. Up to six months.
Sick Leave for Administrative and Sponsored Research Staff There is no formal method of sick leave accrual or accounting for members of the Administrative and Sponsored Research staffs. A reasonable number of justifiable absences are paid in full. Extreme cases of extended illness or accident will be treated on an individual basis, and may be paid for the duration of the absence up to but not normally exceeding a period of six months. Leave Associated with Pregnancy and Childbirth

MIT will grant 8 weeks of paid maternity leave under its sick and extended sick leave program for childbirth and recovery. For other pregnancy-related absences, such as for miscarriage or temporary disability associated with pregnancy, or for absences beyond the 8 weeks following childbirth, paid time off is available only if the employee provides medical documentation from a physician showing that she has a health condition/illness and is unable to work.

Employees may also be eligible for additional unpaid time off under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Massachusetts Maternity Leave Act (MMLA). Please note: FMLA and MMLA leaves run concurrently with paid sick leave. MMLA provides 8 weeks of unpaid leave per birth (16 weeks for twins). Please refer to the Personnel Policy Manual for more information on MMLA.

Long Term Disability Cases extending beyond six months may be eligible to apply for Long Term Disability (LTD) benefits. If approved for LTD participants will receive 60% of their base pay up to a maximum monthly benefit of $15,000. While receiving LTD payments, your MIT retirement, health, dental, and group life insurance coverage will be paid by MIT. Varies
Worker's Compensation Provides insurance coverage for loss wages due to work-related injuries or illnesses. Varies
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Employee may be eligible for leave as an accommodation under the American With Disabilities Act. Varies
