Biographies

Francine Crystal   (fcrystal@mit.edu)
Francine began her career twenty years ago as a community organizer for the Massachusetts Office for Children. After earning an MBA in Organizational Studies from Boston College, Francine began her work as an Organization Development Consultant specializing in working with non-profits and governmental agencies.

Since joining the MIT Human Resources staff in 1998, Francine has concentrated on improving communication between individuals, and within teams and organizations, and on projects which call for faculty, staff and students to work together. Francine has served as an organization development consultant to the Chancellor's Committee on Community, the Committee on Campus Race Relations and the Council on Family and Work. Most recently, she has co-chaired the Staff Quality of Life Committee and supported the development of the Leader to Leader alumni program.

Jeannette Gerzon   (gerzon@mit.edu)
Organization Development Consultant. As a member of the Organization and Employee Development Team, Jeannette’s work includes strategic consultation services, retreat planning, coaching, communications skills training, project development work, and meeting facilitation.

Jeannette has presented communications and related trainings for over 20 years and has led sessions or consulted in such areas as collaborative decision-making, organization development, problem solving, supervisory and management skills, executive board/leadership development, communication skills, curriculum development, mission/vision creation, team building, active listening for conflict management, career development, creativity/innovation, strategic goals development, and related topics. She is certified in or able to offer a number of assessment tools including Inscape’s DISC, the Center for Creative Leadership’s Benchmarks 360, and CCL’s 360-By-Design Assessment Tools.

Prior to her current position in OED, Jeannette worked at the Harvard School of Public Health and as an independent consultant with a variety of organizations as well as many departments and groups within MIT. She also co-founded a manufacturing company and worked extensively in marketing, sales, and product and organization development. Prior to this external work, Jeannette worked at MIT for approximately 17 years and held the positions of Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Director of Career Services, and Advisor on Pre-Professional Education. She received her doctoral degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Margaret Ann Gray  (mag@mit.edu)
Director, Organization and Employee Development. Margaret Ann Gray has been working in the field of human resource development for almost twenty years. Upon earning her MBA, she taught management courses at Wichita State University and began doing consulting work with various businesses in the region. She left WSU to work at Raytheon Aircraft Corporation as a management development specialist and later became responsible for all aspects of employee development for the organization.

Margaret Ann came to MIT in 1991 to rebuild the professional development program for its employees. Through collaborating with others at the Institute, she grew that function to include organization development and to build a team of organization development professionals who serve MIT and its departments, labs, and centers as internal consultants.

As director of OED, she is also responsible for MIT's new career planning services for its employees. Margaret Ann has spoken at various national and international conferences including the Society for Human Resource Management, the American Society for Training & Development, and the International Society for Performance Improvement. Special interests: organization development, leadership development, team building.

Alyce Johnson  (alycej@mit.edu)
Alyce has worked in human resources for over twenty years, having worked in Compensation and Benefits, Staffing, and Employee Relations in health care, newspapers and most recently, in academia. Alyce served as an Human Resource Officer for 6 years at MIT before moving to the Human Resources Practices Design and Development teams -- charged with looking at state-of-the-art human resource practices and the future of human resource practices at the Institute. The opportunity to move into organizational development was a natural progression for the work.

In OED, she has been involved in a variety of initiatives. Her main assignment has been in support of the implementation of an integrated HR and Payroll system using SAP. Alyce's role has been to lead the change management efforts associated with the Project. In addition, Alyce has been involved in design and implementation of the human resource competency-based practices, facilitating groups, understanding workplace culture, and teaching professional development courses.

Judith Stein  (jstein@mit.edu)
Judith Stein's work centers on promoting effective communication and collaboration through retreat planning and facilitation, improving meeting practices and team development. She has a particular interest in performance management as a tool to create productive and positive work environments and coordinated the creation of a web resource on performance reviews and development (http://hrweb.mit.edu/performance). Clients have included the MIT Medical Department, the Graduate Student Office, the Working Group on Support Staff Issues, and the Department of Facilities. Judith teaches "Communicating Upward," a course focused on enhancing communication between employees and their supervisors; "Everyday Leadership," designed to help participants identify leadership opportunities and behaviors outside of official "Leader" positions; and "Performance Planning and Review: Your Role in Your Performance Review," designed to help employees have effective performance review conversations.

Judith joined OED after twenty-plus years of experience at MIT, where she began as support staff and moved into academic departmental administration. Judith has an M.Ed. in Administration, Policy and Planning from Boston University, a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Management from Radcliffe College and a certificate in Organization Development from the NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Science.
