Identify each step/operation as it is presently performed.

Map out each step required, from receipt of material/input until the output produced leaves your area.

  1. Identify ALL operations required at each step; note when there are variations in the standard process.

  2. Note the value/non-value work performed.
    -- checking all supporting documentation for compliance to specifications
    -- getting answers or approvals from others
    -- periodic inspections

  3. Third, note the value-add steps by asking if this is an activity the customer would be willing to pay for.
