  Change Gauge
The first three questions to ask when considering an organizational change
By Jim Dezieck

Purpose: The Change Gauge is a tool for sketching your plans for an organizational change. By using this tool, you can gain insight into

  • whether or not to embark on a change effort (when you must make a decision whether or not to go forward)

  • how to resize a change when needed

  • where to focus attention at the outset of a change effort to best mobilize people

Time: Can be completed by an individual in 15 minutes, but the tool is also useful as the foundation of a deeper discussion with the people facing the change.

Background: The general idea for this tool comes from the three questions that Marvin Weisbord shares in "Assessing the Potential for Action" in his book Productive Workplaces. Weisbord is a well-regarded practitioner, historian, and theorist in management science. His three questions form the three headings of the tool, while the worksheets within each question represent OED's own addition to it.

Instructions:

Use the button below to download the tool as a Word document.

How to download and save this file

To use the tool, simply enter short answers for items A through D, and then proceed to the next step to evaluate the overall results and your action plan. Areas where you end up with quick short answers the first time around may indicate places you'll want to return to and explore in greater detail later.
