Top Ten Tips for Writing Nominations:

  1. Have fun! This is a great thing you are about to do!
  2. Look at the excerpts from nominations for past recipients for examples of the type of work that was rewarded and how it was described. Remember, these are only excerpts, most nominations are 2-3 pages in length.
  3. Read the questions on the nomination form carefully. Respond to as many of the questions as apply to your nominee’s situation.
  4. Share the task of creating the nomination with co-workers by splitting up the nomination questions.
  5. Don't worry about using fancy speech and eloquent images. Just say it like it is. You can even give the information in the form of a bulleted list.
  6. While you are very familiar with your nominee’s work, it is more than likely the members of the selection committee won’t be. Keep that in mind as you describe the nature and quality of the contributions and accomplishments.
  7. Where possible, include measurable results (i.e., monetary savings, a new product or service, clients receiving goods or services in a more timely and/or professional manner, staff morale increasing, students being more informed and better prepared for courses or graduation, etc.).
  8. Include more than one example (the more the better) of how the individual or team went to exceptional lengths to reach their goal. The committee needs to understand how the nominee went above and beyond the daily responsibilities of the job.
  9. Ask co-workers, supervisors, students, and/or faculty (including those in other departments, labs, or centers who may work with the nominee) to include their own nomination or a detailed statement in support of your nomination.
  10. If you have written an Infinite Mile Award nomination this year, you may submit it for an Excellence Award as well. Be sure to review the Excellence Award categories and tailor the nomination to fit one of them.
and one more...
  1. If you submitted an Excellence Award nomination last year, consider revising it and citing most recent, specific examples of contributions made over this year.
