Background:
Coronary arteries are hidden from view by a layer of epicardial fat. Immersion techniques of whole hearts can make these arteries visually transparent and the extent and form of coronary atherosclerotic disease readily appreciable. Digitization of these images and computer reconstruction allows for image enhancement and feature extraction. Dye injection of the arteries reveals the different patterns of coronary disease and the microvascular response as well. Ongoing experiments involve futher development of the image enhancement and segmentation algorithms, image collection, data analysis, and correlation with angiographic findings in living patients.
