Research Foci:
Dr. Smithís research interests focus on cardiac electrophysiology with
a special interest in catheter ablation, atrial fibrillation and quantitative
analytical techniques in biomedical signal processing.
Career Highlights:
Dr. Smith holds a BS in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University,
an MD degree from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard-MIT Division
of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) and a PhD in medical engineering
and medical physics from HST. He completed his medical internship and
residency and his cardiology and clinical electrophysiology training at
Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Krannert Institute of Cardiology
in Indianapolis and Washington University in St. Louis. He has held faculty
positions at the School of Medicine and the Department of Biomedical Engineering
at Washington University in St. Louis.
Before joining Guidant, Dr. Smith was also director of the Arrhythmia
Institute and Research Director of the Cardiovascular Group, both in Fairfax,
VA.
Dr. Smith holds a number of patents in the area of signal processing
and catheter and defibrillator design. He is on the Board of Directors
of University Enterprise Laboratories, a technology incubator aligned
with the University of Minnesota.
