Barbara L. Smith, MD 1983, PhD

Research:
Dr. Smith's research interests focus on clinical trials addressing therapeutic options for patients with breast cancer and developing a linked clinical and clinical research breast disease database.

Career Highlights:
Dr. Smith received her SB from MIT and PhD from the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, her MD from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. She was an intern and resident in general surgery at Brigham and Womenıs Hospital. She has held surgical oncology positions at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, West Roxbury Medical Center, and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Smith joined the staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital as director of the Comprehensive Breast Center in 1992. She is also the co-director of the Women's Cancer Program and chair of the Joint Venture Breast Steering Committee at Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare.

At the national level, Dr. Smith serves as chair of the Breast Surgery Subcommittee of Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB), a national cooperative cancer trials group. In this role she sets and implements the breast surgery clinical trials agenda, and works with members of the Breast and Radiation Oncology Committees on trials with a surgical component.

In 1994 at the MGH, Dr. Smith developed and implemented a clinical database for patients with benign and malignant breast disease. This database contains information on all MGH Breast Program visits since 1994. This MGH database was merged into the Dana Farber Partners CancerCare database and continues to collect data on all new breast cancer patients.
