Dr. Sukhatme received his SB and PhD degrees in physics from MIT and his MD from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, in 1979.
In 2003, Sukhatme and a team of researchers at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, made a major advance by identifying a protein that may lead to the development of preeclampsia, a complication of pregnancy characterized by hypertension, edema, and protein in the urine. It afflicts five to eight percent of pregnant women and is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide. Because it often compels premature delivery to save the mother, it is also a major cause of infant mortality in developing countries.
