=46YI: Press Release
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (April 2, 1997) Fifteen new academic members were
added to the programs of New Media Centers=AE, an innovative non-profit
consortium of higher education institutions and digital technology
companies promoting teaching and learning using new
media.<fontfamily><param>Times</param>
</fontfamily>The new members bring the total number to 85 hands-on
campus centers around the world. New Media Centers has presence in 34
US states, 4 Canadian provinces, and Australia, Colombia, Finland,
Sweden, and Taiwan. Activities sponsored by New Media Centers include
novel models of interaction such as distance learning, video
teleconference, technology transfer through staff loan, online
discussions, and more traditional face-to-face seminars and
conferences. "We're delighted to welcome these new members who are
ready to be active participants in New Media Centers' programs," said
Nancy Frishberg, Executive Director of New Media Centers. "Our steady
growth encourages many opportunities for exciting collaboration among
academic and corporate members."<fontfamily><param>Times</param>
</fontfamily>The selection of new members through a rigorous screening
process increases the diversity of institutions from all sectors of
higher education. The new members represent small and large campuses,
such as the Art Institute of Boston with an enrollment of 450 students,
and University of Texas at Austin where nearly 50,000 students enroll
each year. This year's additions to the academic roster add strong
ethnic diversity to the mix, with El Centro College (Dallas CCD, TX),
an urban campus with more than 50% African American and Hispanic
students, and Florida A&M University, an historically Black university,
and Santa Fe (NM) Community College, serving a rural population rich in
Native American culture and arts.<fontfamily><param>Times</param>
</fontfamily>In many cases the New Media Center is managed from a
campus-wide service facility, such as the library, office of
instructional technologies or media services. The New Media Center
"will complement and strengthen our ongoing commitment to provide a
high-quality computing environment for the MIT community," said Katie
Livingston of Academic Computing at Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. For other institutions, a specific school or department
initiates the integration of new media into the professional training
of students and the pedagogical practice of faculty. At University of
Colorado, Boulder, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication will
take the lead in formation of the New Media Center. Loyola College in
Maryland's efforts finds leadership in the Department of Writing &
Media collaborating with the Office of Information
Services.<fontfamily><param>Times</param>
</fontfamily>New Media Centers, first announced in October 1993, works
to improve higher education through the use of innovative new media
tools and technologies to facilitate learning. Through the partnership
with hardware, software, and publishing companies such as Apple
Computer, Adobe, Macromedia and Korg, the New Media Center on campus
introduces faculty to the tools and techniques of digital media. Most
importantly, the Centers' activities focus on appropriate use of
technology for media-based curriculum materials in classroom,
laboratory, studio and other settings. Both the new and continuing
members choose ways to reach out beyond the campus to K-12 educators,
the local business community, government and professionals in a variety
of fields where digital technology is changing professional
practice.<fontfamily><param>Times</param>
