Constitution
|

| PREAMBLE |
|||
We, the members of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology Hunger Action Group, adopt this constitution
to define flexible yet accurate regulations of the organization.
|
|||
ARTICLE I |
|||
Hunger Action Group is
an organization of people in the MIT community concerned with and interested
in acting on the issues of hunger. The group functions on the assumption
that education and action are necessarily dependent on each other:
education without action is fruitless, but action without education
can be nonproductive and even harmful.
Hunger Action Group may affiliate itself with as many local, regional or national organizations as needed to carry out the functions which seem most appropriate, as long as any such affiliation does not hamper the activity, character, or independence of the group. |
|||
ARTICLE II |
|||
Membership in Hunger Action Group
is open (but not excluded) to anyone of the MIT community, including
all undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. The organization
will not discriminate based on any characteristic listed in MIT's Non-Discrimination
Statement.
Anyone may consider her/himself a member of the group after participating in any activity of the group. At all times there must be at least five active members. |
|||
ARTICLE III |
|||
The group will have at least two officers.
One will be responsible for the finances and account(s) of the group.
The other will be responsible for setting the meetings, running the
meetings, ensuring the continuance of the group from one semester to
the next, or finding others to do any and all of the above. In addition,
he or she shall be the official representative of the group to any
other organization and to MIT.
These leaders will be selected through elections that shall occur at the beginning of the school year. All officers of this organization must be distinct persons. Any member of this organization is eligible to run for office. A member is elected if he or she wins a majority of the voting members; quorum for elections is five members of the group. The term of office runs for one school year. Officers may be prematurely removed by a two-thirds vote of all active members. |
|||
ARTICLE IV |
|||
Hunger Action Group will have meetings
as often as necessary, but at least one within the first two weeks
of each term. All meetings should be duly publicized prior to the meeting.
The activities of the group will be carried out by individuals or groups
of individuals as appropriate, encouraging all members of the group
to be as involved as they wish. All decisions (except ratification,
suspension, and amendment of this constitution) should be made by general
consensus whenever possible and by vote when consensus cannot be reached.
|
|||
AARTICLE
V
|
|||
This constitution will be ratified
by a two-thirds vote. It may be amended or suspended by a two-thirds
vote at a meeting that has been duly publicized. Any member may propose
amendment or suspension of this constitution. Quorum for the amendment
or suspension of this constitution shall be one-third of all members
of the organization.
|
|||
ARTICLE VI |
|||
Hunger Action Group agrees to abide
by the rules and regulations of the Association of Student Activities,
and its executive board. This constitution, amendments to it, and the
by-laws of this organization shall be subject to review by the ASA
Executive Board to insure that they are in accordance with the aforementioned
rules and regulations.
