| Track & Field
Cross
Country at MIT
At MIT, Cross Country is considered first and
foremost a team sport. Regardless of the disparity of talent
and performances we will still only be as good as our fifth
runner. We like to carry that a step further and say we will
only be as good as our last runner, for that last runner will
be pushing the person in front of them and so on up the line.
Everyone is important on the team so consider yourself in those
terms.
Our intra-team goal every meet is to close our
gap within the team, not only runners 1-5, but also one through
the last runner. Our short-term team goal of course is to win!
Our inter-team season goal is for each person to improve his
or her best performance physically and mentally. Our season
team goal is to be undefeated and to make the NCAA Division
III Championships. This may sound like an elitist philosophy,
but remember, even though only the top 7 go to the nationals
each of you determines and plays a part in how good that top
7 will be.
Our goal as your coach is to help you know yourself.
By pointing out weaknesses, hopefully you will learn to correct
them and put them to use not only in running but in other parts
of your life. I want you to become competitive in competitive
situations. Regardless of the circumstances or the odds, never
concede. In order for someone else to win, make them beat you.
I want you to be able to run a total mental race, concentrating
every step, finishing, able to say I could not have run any
better. Remember every person you beat can make the difference
in how the team finishes. Don't be so selfish as to think that
if you are having a bad day you don't care how badly you finish—this
is a team sport. You must learn to depend on each other—to
know each team member will give their all. It is a lot easier
to give when one knows they will also receive.
Don't be afraid to lose. In order for you to win
a tough battle you have to be willing to accept failure. Too
many people like to save it for the "could haves"
and "should haves," but it's a winner who puts it
all on the line. If you do not want to fail, then never try,
but don't join our team.
Cross Country takes a big commitment. Don't cut
yourself short by not taking good care of yourself. Eating and
sleeping properly are so important. Learn to be consistent in
all aspects of your training. Our team practices are not enough.
Typically what separates our team in performances is the part
of training that is to be done on your own and the little things that keep you healthy. The morning runs,
the weekend runs, weight training, stretching, foam rolling, ice baths, proper nutrition, sleep, and good study
habits are what makes the difference. Hard work and discipline can make up
for lack of talent. That can apply relatively to everyone.
My door is always open. I hope you will feel
that you can talk to me about anything, even if you just want
someone to listen. As they say, luck is when opportunity meets
preparedness. Here's wishing you the best of luck.

| Honors Gained by Track Men and Women
Track and Field has earned a high reputation in
its over one hundred years of existence at MIT. Literally, thousands
of students have had the pleasure and privilege of taking part
in the sport. Many former team members have earned high academic
honors at the Institute followed by outstanding and highly respected
positions in education and industry all over the world. Some received
national honors as athletes while, at the same time, maintaining
perfect GPAs.
We are always pleased when former track men and
women return to the Institute and recall fond memories and the
enjoyment of participation despite the hard work and sacrifice
it seemed to be at the time. In fact, we believe it is the self-discipline
and hard work which makes it a worthwhile achievement and a lasting
experience.
Our program is team oriented, and therefore, its
base is the tri - quad meet competition mixed in with a few invitationals.
We compete against many fine colleges and universities throughout
the New England area. At the end of each season there are a series
of conference and regional championships where MIT has enjoyed
both individual and team success over the years.
As coaches, we shall do our best to help you along
the way. We look at our objectives as being two-fold. One is to
assist each individual in their striving to reach full potential
as a track and field athlete, and secondly, to mold all the individuals
into the best team possible. Within this handbook, guidelines
have been set forth indicating how we feel this can best be achieved.
We also believe it will help foster a better understanding between
coach and athlete at the outset.
Our coaching philosophy is based on the desire to
win; and we will do our utmost under the rules of fair play to
achieve that end. We feel that the by-products of this kind of
program result in the best possible athletic experience for the
individuals participating in it. Our objective is a "first-class"
inter-collegiate track and field program. Therefore, we expect
a commitment by our athletes that is consistent with these goals.

Director of Track & Field & Cross
Country
Captains
The Captains are elected by the varsity team members,
managers and coaches and enjoy substantial prestige both on
and off the field. They are the official team leaders and the
link between the team and the coaches. It is a position of leadership,
which should be kept in mind at election time. They need not
be the best performers, but they should be athletes who have
demonstrated loyalty and enthusiasm toward the sport plus the
necessary qualities of leadership.
Training and Conditioning
Basic areas of concentration
besides skill are speed, strength, endurance and flexibility.
The first weeks are
the hardest -- expect to be tired and sore. A well-conditioned
athlete recovers quickly.
Equally critical to
your recoverability, you need to pay attention to what and when
you eat. Preparing for a training session and also providing
afterwards for the replenishment of fluid and fuel stores used
in training requires planning. You are responsible for balancing
your nutritional intake in accordance with the demands of your
training. See coaching staff for help with this.
A minimum of eight hours
sleep is necessary if you are to be rested for tough workouts
and competitions. Where this is not always practical it is highly
recommended that you are well organized and maximize your rest. Anyone sleeping less than four hours the night before will attend pracitce but will not be permitted to workout. The same policy applies to less than 10 hours sleep over two days and 18 hours sleep over three days.
Smoking, drugs and alcoholic
beverages do not fit in with our program.
Warm-up exercises, drills,
and stretching pertinent to your event are compulsory before
all workouts.
Strength-training is
a mandatory part of our program, and is key to our success.
At the beginning of
the indoor season, all candidates will participate as a group
in a short period of general conditioning. The purpose of this
program other than conditioning is to develop some team cohesiveness
and unity.
During vacations, you are
expected to workout on your own. This is necessary to maintain
your conditioning. Check with your event coach concerning your workout
plan.
Strength Training
It is expected that each athlete
follow the strength training program exactly as designed.
Modifications made to weights lifted, sets, reps and
tempo/recovery may only be done after appropriate consultation
is made with coaching staff.
Strength training programs are
specifically designed to meet the strength and power needs
of each individual event group. Within each event group's
strength training program we can individualize as needed.
A well-designed and implemented
strength training program will provide you with the greatest
opportunity for performance improvement. Strength training
is periodized in a way that will allow for greatest strength
and power production during peaking periods.
Even the best designed and implemented
strength training plans, are only as good as the support and
execution provided by each athlete. Power and strength
gains are in proportion to your attitude and dedication.
Safety
Whether on the track, infield, or outside on the
roads, injuries may happen that require immediate medical attention.
If you, or one of your teammates has such an injury, the campus
police should be contacted immediately. On campus, the number
is 100. Off campus you should dial 253-1212.
Whenever practicing outside, whether on the MIT athletic facilities,
or on the roads, certain precautions need to be taken when lightning
is in the vicinity.
Members of the Cross Country and Track and Field teams are expected
and advised to follow the traffic laws and and use good common
sense when crossing roads, running off campus, and anytime when
running in traffic. Reflective vests are available for those
who wish to use them when running in the dark.
Practice
Team practice is daily from 5-7 pm,
unless posted otherwise. The indoor and outdoor tracks are reserved
exclusively for the team at that time.
Team members are expected to practice
regularly and on time. Those that do not, will be dropped from
the squad. If, for any reason, you cannot attend practice,
it is your responsibility to notify your head coach
, and event coach ahead of time.
Contacting one or the other is not sufficient.
Any athlete missing practice without
notifying the coach will not participate in the next scheduled
meet. Any athlete missing 3 or more excused absences in a week
will not compete in the next scheduled meet.
An athlete missing a competition
due to disciplinary reasons mentioned above (unexcused absences) will not be eligible
for a letter award that season.
Athletes will not wear their meet
uniforms or warmups in practice, or anywhere other than a meet.
Athletes with classes until 5 pm
should get to practice as soon as possible thereafter.
Plan for this in advance
A proper warm-up and cool-down are
always an important part of practice. We consider these a high
priority. Do not cut them short because of time constraints.
Workouts are designed to be completed.
Injury or sickness should be the only reason for cutting
short a workout and then communication with the coach is expected to aid in that decision.
Getting treatment from Sports Medicine
is also a high priority and is considered a part of practice.
This includes simple but important things like heating before
the team practice and icing after. Do not cut these short because
of time constraints.
Injured athletes that cannot practice
should see a trainer daily - they are employed for that purpose.
Any injury or illness should be reported to the coach immediately.
After seeing the athletic trainers the injured athlete should
come to practice daily to see what role they
can play in practice.
Practicing with the team is mandatory
except under special circumstances and with the knowledge of
the coach.
Practicing should be done in the
team practice shirts, which should be changed regularly.
How you practice is usually a good
indication of how you will compete.
Meets
Entries are posted on our bulletin
board, sent out on email or announced at a team meeting. Those listed are expected
to make all meets and trips.
Entries are limited by NCAA and Games
Committee rules for regular season meets and performance standards
for most championships. There are general standards set by the
coaches for all meets relative to the competition, which may
supersede the above.
Make sure your equipment is in good
shape and you have the proper size spikes. Get this taken care
of the day before the meet.
The designated meet uniform (clean)
is to be worn for all competitions. Hats, headbands, sunglasses
and tights are not part of our uniform. An exception for tights
might be very cold weather or leg muscle injuries whereby school
issue tights worn under the shorts will be permitted. Warm-ups
other than team issue will not be tolerated.
Team members are expected to be in
attendance for the entire meet. While at the meet, athletes
should be participating or sitting with the team supporting their competing teammates, separate from
the crowd (friends, significant others, family).
Help your teammates whenever possible
(holding blocks, getting steps, etc.). Always encourage and
cheer for your teammates. Be enthusiastic and have fun!
Make sure you get a proper warm-up
before your event -- know the time schedule. A proper cool-down
is equally important.
Know the rules of your event. If
you notice any improprieties, make sure a coach is advised immediately.
Always be courteous and well-mannered
toward officials. Most of these men and women are well-qualified
and dedicated to the sport, and do provide a necessary service
for us.
Athletes are not to compete in warmups
or anything other than the meet uniform.
You may not scratch yourself from
an event. Only coaches may scratch athletes from events. Field
event athletes will check with coaches concerning passes and
starting heights.
Dropping out of races is not acceptable
unless sick or injured.
Work hard for every place -- meets
can be won or lost on the last scoring place.
Good sportsmanship is expected of
our athletes. Be humble in victory and congratulatory in defeat.
Trips
Trips will leave on schedule. Don't
take any chances -- get to the bus a little early. Use the "buddy
system" for trips with early departures. Get your equipment
in order the day before the trip.
You are expected to be well-dressed
and well-groomed on trips. Wearing jeans, t-shirts or sweats
are not acceptable. The MIT varsity track jacket is very acceptable.
Anyone in violation of proper training
conduct on an away trip may be suspended from the competition
and team.
We encourage books and studying on
trips, but they are not to be brought to the track.
Be a good representative of your
team, school and sport.

General Information
We compete against colleges and universities
in the New England area (mostly Division III teams).
We belong to the following associations
for championship competition:
New England Division III Association
(NE Div. III)
Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference
(ECAC)
New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC)
New England Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (NEIcAAA)
Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic
Association of America (IC4A)
National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA Div. III)
Athletes must qualify for the above
championships. Our policy is to have you compete as far as your
ability can take you.
Student-athletes who make our team
are expected to contribute to the success of that team as determined
by the coaches. This will enable the coaches to focus their
attention on those capable of making a difference. Those who
do not fit into this category will be cut from the team. We
will do our best to field the most competitive team possible,
while keeping an eye on future development.
Intramural participation should in
no way interfere with varsity participation (practice or meet).
Team members are expected to abide by the rules of the Intramural
Council.
Participation over IAP is mandatory
for all team members. Athletes are expected to report back at
least one week prior to scheduled competition unless told otherwise
by the Head Coach.
Team members are expected to attend
all team meetings and team pictures. Missing the team picture
may mean the loss of an award.
Shoe policy -- Athletes must supply
their own shoes. If this provides a hardship, it should be brought
to the coaches' attention.
There shall be no outside competition
during the season without permission of the coaches. (no marathons
during the season)
Any academic or fraternity/sorority
conflicts should be handled early. We cannot have a successful
team without a responsible individual commitment.
Championship Meet Policy
We like to think our track and field athletes are
working toward making the various post-season championships and
take pride in participating and representing the Institute and
team. There are several factors, which influence the selection
of athletes for these meets. As coaches, the foremost consideration
is that the athlete be competitive at the particular level of
competition. Most of the championships have minimum qualifying
standards, which serve as a very objective first criterion. Thereafter,
the athlete's ability relative to the rest of the field and his
or her chances for success are primary considerations. Other factors
such as distance and cost do effect this subjective evaluation.
Generally, the NEWMAC, and the New England Division
III Championships are considered "team" championships
for our program; whereas the New Englands, IC4A / ECAC and NCAA
are considered "individual" championships for our outstanding
performers. The New England Division III Association consists
of forty-two small colleges within District I of the NCAA. The
competition is very compatible with our program, and we should
be striving to be contenders at this meet every season.
Anyone placing in the New England Division III Championship
will automatically be entered in the New England Championship
if they have met the necessary standard. Remaining championships are primarily to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship. Of course, the qualifying standard must have been
achieved before an individual can move along to any of these
championships.
It has always been our policy to allow and encourage
track and field athletes to compete to the level of their ability.
If you "earn it" we'll do our best to see that you get
there! Even in this time of "tight" money and budgetary
cut-backs, we are confident that this policy can be maintained
for our program.
Some Closing Bits of Philosophy
"Anything worth doing is worth
doing well..." Track is too much work to go half way --
go all the way, and have no regrets.
Don't get discouraged -- it takes
time to make a successful track and field athlete.
Be coachable -- like athletes, coaches
aren't infallible, but our objectives are the same -- to make
you a better track and field athlete.
The key to success is improvement
-- strive for it at every opportunity. Set performance goals,
and train with the desire to meet those goals.
Be enthusiastic and have fun! The
people who put the most into it usually get the most out of
it.
Never miss an opportunity to become
a better athlete.
Luck is where opportunity meets preparedness
- be ready for the opportunities.
