The 2007 Outdoor Track and Field team picked up where the indoor team left off, recording a perfect 8-0 regular season record and then winning their seventh consecutive NEWMAC Conference title. Individually, Stephen Morton '10, led the way with freshman records in the 100 (10.88), 200 (21.91), 400 (49.02) as well as a provisional national qualifying mark in the triple jump (46-4). For his efforts Morton was voted team MVP by his teammates as well as earning NEWMAC athlete of the year in track and field. Greg Tao '10, was the only individual winner (pole vault) in the New England Division III Championship for the Engineers but many MIT athletes came through, particularly the freshmen, who scored 29 points in the championship.
MIT displayed tremendous depth in the horizontal jumps, pole vault and the running events from the 800-10,000 in 2007. This should not change in 2008 with only five graduating seniors leaving the ranks. Anthony Teixeira '08, was voted the most improved as well as tri-captain in 2008 along with Chris Bruce '08 and Joe Roy-Mayhew '08.
Returning New England Division III Championship scorers are: Stephen Morton
(100, Long Jump), Liam Fedus (800), Yermie Cohen (1500), Hemagiri Arumugam (5000), Trevor Rundell (10K), Chris Wong (10K), Brian Jacokes (10K), Johannes Schneider (3000 Steeplechase), James Oleinik (Shot Put), Anthony Teixeira (110HH, Long Jump), Omari Stephens (Pole Vault, 110HH), Greg Tao (Pole Vault) and Patrick Barragan (Pole Vault), . A
strong group of freshmen will undoubtedly help the team maintain
its strong winning tradition and even improve on the 2007 season. |
