Date: 16 January 2009 Participants: Vadim Burwitz (VB), Matteo Guainazzi (MG), Frank Haberl (FH), Manabu Ishida (MI), Herman Marshall (HM), Jukka Nevalainen (JN), Paul Plucinski (PP), Andy Pollock (AP), Steve Sembay (SS). 0) Agree on agenda and review of actions - the list of contact points for future mission is reviewed. The status can be summarised as follows: * Fermi, David Thompson. He has been invited to join the IACHEC mailing list, but he has not taken any actions or replied. MG will contact him directly to invite him to join the next IACHEC meeting or to indicate an alternative contact point * AGILE: similar situation as for Fermi: M.Feroci has been invited to join. MG will contact him. * Symbol-X. At the last IACHEC meeting A.Moretti and M.Freyberg gave talks on the calibration plans. It is assumed that they will continue following the IACHEC on behalf of this mission * Spectrum X-Gamma (eRosita): covered by the MPE colleagues. J.Kaastra gave a talk on the micro-calorimeter calibration plan at IACHEC meeting #3. * NuStar: has joined the IACHEC mailing list * MAXI: MI will provide MG with a contact point * NEXT: M.Ishida * IXO: PP/HM will make sure that a US contact point (Randall Smith?) will attend, MG will contact A.Parmar for the European side. - MG has proposed to link the repository of calibration files maintained by HEASARC from the IACHEC web portal. This will be implemented by the next teleconference. - VB will send a reminder to all the Working Groups (WGs) Chairs on how the IACHEC Wiki works a) Update on the WG activities (if any) Clusters: The cluster sample has been reanalysed with the most recent Chandra effective area files. The discrepancy between the temperatures measured by XMM-Newton and Chandra is now lower. A paper is being written on this results; a draft will be circulated to the IACHEC WGs Chairs for information. An analysis of the Suzaku observations of the same clusters will follow shortly. There has been lots of activity in the Chandra calibrations, whose results will have an impact on the activities of different working groups: - re-analysis of the 1E0102 spectra by PP with the new Chandra effective areas has yielded an increase of the flux measured by Chandra by about 5%; Neon lines are now more consistent with XMM-Newton, while Oxygen lines are less. The overall spectral slope remains unvaried. - HM is working on a new time- and spatial-dependent model of contamination. - The spectrum of the calibration source turned out to be different from the specifications. The optical depth at 700 eV is larger by ~10%. This will probably have an impact of ~10% at half a keV. b) Agenda of the next IACHEC meeting The scheme of the meeting assumed by MG in drafting the announcement is agreed. It reflects the structure of the last IACHEC meeting, with the addition of a section of "Theory meets calibration". It is advisable to allocate more time to "new" mission in the session dedicated to a summary of the calibration status. c) Invitation to external people Each WG Chair will send by Friday, 23 January, a list of "external colleagues" (i.e., astronomers not directly involved in the IACHEC), whose expertise could be instrumental to the activity of the WG. MG will send them the announcement once published on the web. The list of invitation shall take into account the limited number of seats available in the IACHEC meeting venue (~35). d) Presentations from upcoming missions See Point 0) above. e) IACHEC meeting announcement A check box needs to be added on whether people who wish to stay on the night of Wednesday. MI will check whether it is possible for the IACHEC participants to sleep at the meeting venue on Wednesday night. MI will also investigate if an additional accommodation is available in the area, should it be required by an unexpected influx of participants. The announcement will be: * published on the IACHEC web portal * circulated to the IACHEC mailing list as soon as the final logistical details are cleared up, and MI gives the final "green light". The deadline for registration in the draft announcement is the not existing "29 February 2009". It has to be amended. After the closure of the deadline, the announcement will be modified in such a way to leave open the possibility for further registrations, however under the condition that the maximum number of participants that the meeting venue can allow is not exceeded. This "trimmed" announcement will be advertised by the WG Chairs through different mailing lists to increase the IACHEC visibility in the community at large. f) Next meeting: ideally in the week 2-6 February. WG Chairs will present their goals for the 4th IACHEC meeting.
