In this class you will learn basic machine shop practice: layout, process planning, milling, drilling, turning, tool selection and grinding, measurement, and use of handtools (center punch, file, etc.). As time permits, we will also cover material properties, inspection techniques, and other pertinent issues.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a simple, yet beautiful, book by hand? If so, please join the Preservation Services staff at the Libraries for an afternoon of creative pamphlet making. During the workshop, traditional techniques for folding pages, sewing pages together, and making a cover for a pamphlet will be introduced. We will provide a selection of blank text paper, decorated cover papers, and colored thread for participants to make two small pamphlets each. Feel free to bring collage materials to paste into your creations.

This second IAP boat-building course will again be building a 11 ft Shellback rowing/sailing dinghy from the designer Joel White's ('54) plans. Making oars and sailing rig are also part of the course. Participants will receive professional supervision and explanation from an experienced boat builder, learn useful woodworking techniques and appreciate the value of team work. The boat will join MIT Nautical Association's fleet. These boats are a dream to row, easy to rig, and fun to sail. Please come aboard and help us enhance the boating experience for everyone on the Charles. Participants are expected to attend a minimum of 8 sessions, including a mandatory wood shop orientation on the first day.

Radio Controlled Landsailing Challenge

Participants will be introduced to the basic principles of radio controlled landsailing and model building and then be challenged to design and build their own models to compete in an RC Landsailing Regatta at the end of IAP. No sailing or model building experience is required. The first few meetings will introduce landsailing and offer design advice and sample models to work from. Everyone will then have two weeks to build their models before the final week of testing culminating in the first ever MIT RC Landsailing Race.
Participants will be required to provide their own building materials. Race date and time to be determined by participants.
