Toward a Notation for Self-describing Systems

We are struggling to finish the definition of a notation system and conceptual model for multi-level self-describing systems. For example, a physical instance is at level 0, its data value at level 1, its field name at level 2, etc. We have not yet found all the higher level primitives for such a system, which is believed to be very general. Ray Ferrara '67 is a nationally-recognized data warehousing and metadata repository consultant, currently with KPMG.

This is a hands-on workshop that will help new Arcinfo and Arcview GIS users import and work with Digital Elevation Models. We will be downloading Digital Elevation Models in SDTS format and importing them into Arc/Info. We will look at basic GRID and Arcview Spatial Analyst hydrologic functions.

This three-hour lecture/demonstration session gives an overview of the electronic publishing process as it works at MIT, focusing on: 1. how to code files using HTML tags (HTML is the HyperText Markup Language, the standard for publishing on the Web) 2.how to upload files to the Athena system for delivery through MIT’s primary Web server,web.mit.edu. Special attention is paid to issues affecting websites at MIT (MITnet rules of use, Athena file conventions, special services available on web.mit.edu, etc.)
