Euclidean geometry has become a forgotten subject in the midst of modern geometry such as topology and differential geometry. Come learn about this fascinating subject. In this seminar, we will explore some interesting topics connected mainly with triangles and circles (such as the nine point circle, pedal triangles, theorems of Ceva, Morley, and others). Seminar participation will be encouraged but not required.

Geometric Algebra: Imaginary Numbers Are Real

Geometric algebra is a natural extension of vector algebra to metric geometries of arbitrary dimension, signature and curvature. A growing number of scholars have come to view it as a universal geometric language encompassing most of physics and much of mathematics. These four lectures will give a light introduction to the subject and some of its many applications, including molecular conformation, NMR spectroscopy, and quantum computing.

Machine Learning by Discovering Macro-operators

Macro-operators (compiled sequences of lower-level operators) are a powerful abstraction technique, enabling complex planning and problem-solving by both humans and computers. We will explore methods for discovering macro-operators in the context of puzzles and video games (e.g. Rubik's Cube and Tetris) and work to build these techniques into machine learning programs. This activity could lead to on-going UROP projects.

Most people who take this training in mediation find their views on conflict resolution are permanently changed and their interpersonal communications much improved.
