Intro to Photography in the Digital Domain

Explore color and design with Majolica, a style of decoration imitating Chinese porcelain. The technique is to glaze earthenware/terracotta with an opaque white glaze, then "paint" colorful decorations on it. Students mix glazes and colorants. With no lens, a pinhole camera is one of the most primitive tools for taking pictures. Pinhole images allow us to see as the eye and lens cannot. We will learn pinhole theory and practice, build our own cameras, take pictures, and share our results. Students should have basic photography experience. Explore lighting techniques within a controlled studio environment. First class: lecture/demonstration, followed by directed shooting with a model. The sketch is the most expressive drawing; it is not meant to produce anything but one’s own clarification. The sketch is a way of thinking, a way of seeing, and a way of understanding the physical world in which we operate. It is a very personal, powerful, and analytical design tool. This course is grounded on the concept of understanding through doing. It is intended as a self-inquiry to explore and develop the skills of the individual through a set of diverse sketching exercises. Each session will focus on a different phenomenon (from sound to surface), with an emphasis on the 3-dimensional sketch. Students requested to finance own materials and local travel.
