CMI Connections

CMI Connections is a one-week shared program that brings together 30 MIT undergraduates and 30 University of Cambridge undergraduates for a week to create a community of persons committed to making a difference in the global communities of which they are a part.
A comprehensive curriculum has been expressly designed for this unique opportunity. It takes the best ideas of MIT LeaderShape and molds them into an exciting new experience of international scope.
There is no charge, and admission is only by application. Applications may be obtained online (http://web.mit.edu/cmi/connections) and are due October 26, 2001. Participants stay at the conference site throughout the six days. CMI Connections is sponsored by the Cambridge MIT Institute (CMI).

Charm School 2002

How do I ask for a date? Should I speak to strangers when riding in an elevator? At what point in an interview should I ask about salary range? Can I use my cell phone in a restaurant? Etiquette-related subjects will be taught in an informal, fun atmosphere at Charm School. No pre-registration is required; students are free to choose from the many topics offered. The most ambitious students may earn "charm credits" towards a formal Charm School degree. A Bachelor's degree is awarded for completing six subjects, a Master's for eight, and a Ph.D. for 12. Degrees will be awarded at the Charm School Commencement from 4:30-5:00 in the Student Center lobby. All members of the MIT community are encouraged to attend both the afternoon event and the Commencement ceremony. This year, we are excited to turn the Student Center into a real Charm School!

In Celebration of Modeling and Simulation: Diversity on Common Grounds

A two-day workshop to promote awareness, exchange, and collaboration among individuals who work with modeling and simulation at various length/time scales in their research. There is a growing interest in departments and divisions across campus in developing and applying electronic structure calculations, atomistic (molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo), mesocale (time-element), and continuum (computational fluid dynamics and continuum elasticity) methods to problems in physics, chemistry, engineering, and biology. Workshop will be informal, open, and interactive. Morning sessions feature brief presentations by project leaders introducing their research, with afternoons devoted to a few topics of common interest to the audience (such as linking micro to meso scale, modeling microstructural evolution in various kinds of 'materials', saddle-point searching techniques, and use of visualization). Event organized by Prof. Yip and Dr. Ju Li (Course 22) in cooperation with faculty colleagues in Courses 1,2,3,10,18,HST & BEH. All participants are welcome; early registration is encouraged.

MIT will be opening an innovative new child care center in the Stata Building in 2003/2004, designed by acclaimed architect Frank Gehry. The Stata Child Care Center will serve 104 children of MIT students, faculty, and staff. Participants will be offered a slide presentation of the architectural model, a construction update, and an overview of the child care center program, with an opportunity to provide suggestions to members of the MIT Stata Child Care Center Design Committee.
