This is intended as an introduction to basic close up and not so close up magic. The "leader" is only moderately experienced and is mainly using the activity as an opportunity to improve his skills with others who are interested in learning. The number of sessions will depend on the interests of the group.

Arts and Crafts in Hyperbolic, Euclidean, and Spherical Space

Prereq: A desire to visualize funky shapes.

Make and bring home your own copy of hyperbolic space, learn about geometry, the shape of space, donuts, and double donuts. We'll construct wacky 3-spaces that don't look at all like the one we live in. All (Euclidean 3-space embeddable) construction materials will be provided. Each day can stand alone but will provide a better picture with the other days.

Build Your Own Loudspeakers

Fee: 180.00 for materials for speakers

Save 60-80% on the cost of comparable commercial loudspeakers by making your own. For beginners, the course will cover loudspeaker design and construction. No audio engineering background needed, it includes crossover filter design, selection of speakers, how to build enclosures, etc. Class includes 4 evening lectures about design and theory and 3 morning sessions on how to build them in the shop. Additional time during regular shop hours will be needed to complete your speakers.

Chainmail Workshop

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a simple, yet beautiful, book by hand? If so, please join the Preservation Services staff at the Libraries for an afternoon of creative pamphlet making. During the workshop, traditional techniques for folding pages, sewing pages together, and making a cover for a pamphlet will be introduced. We will provide a selection of blank text paper, decorated cover papers, and colored thread for participants to make two small pamphlets each. Please sign up via email to caldwell@mit.edu.
