Arts and Crafts in Hyperbolic, Euclidean, and Spherical Space
Yvonne Lai
Wed Jan 9, Thu Jan 10, Tue Jan 15, 03-04:00pm, 24-619
No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)
Prereq: A desire to visualize funky shapes.
Make and bring home your own copy of hyperbolic space, learn about geometry, the shape of space, donuts, and double donuts. We'll construct wacky 3-spaces that don't look at all like the one we live in. All (Euclidean 3-space embeddable) construction materials will be provided. Each day can stand alone but will provide a better picture with the other days.

Fun With Euclidean Geometry
John Gonzalez, Glenn Iba
Mon, Wed, Fri, Jan 14, 16, 18, 23, 25, 28, 30, 03-04:00pm, 24-619
No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)
Prereq: Familiarity with high school geometry
Euclidean geometry has become a forgotten subject in the midst of modern geometry such as topology and differential geometry. Come learn about this fascinating subject. In this seminar, we will explore some interesting topics connected mainly with triangles and circles (such as the nine point circle, pedal triangles, theorems of Ceva, Morley, and others). Seminar participation will be encouraged but not required.

Kitchen Chemistry
Dr. Patti Christie
Wed Jan 23, 01:30-03:30pm, 24-612
No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Single session event
Cooking may be the oldest and most widespread application of chemistry, and recipes may be the oldest practical result of chemical research. We shall do some cooking experiments to illustrate chemical principles, including extraction, denaturation, and phase changes. This is a preview of a for-credit seminar which will be offered this coming spring.

Machine Learning by Discovering Macro-operators
Glenn Iba
Thu Jan 10, 17, 24, 31, 07:30-09:00pm, 24-619
No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)
Prereq: none
Macro-operators (compiled sequences of lower-level operators) are a powerful abstraction technique, enabling complex planning and problem-solving by both humans and computers. We will explore methods for discovering macro-operators in the context of puzzles and video games (e.g. Rubik's Cube and Tetris) and work to build these techniques into machine learning programs. This activity could lead to on-going UROP projects.

Jewish and Islamic traditions possess diagrammatic languages for mapping consciousness maps, whose roots extend to Pyramid Texts and Sumer. Tools of modern logic and dynamic systems math will be used to interpret the maps in modern terms, leading to a blueprint for emotional-affect-response stimulation software deriving from Jim Callahan and Ralph Abraham's Catastrophe and Chaos work.
