Choral Workshop: Music of Ancient Russia
Benjamin Monreal
Sat Jan 26, 02-05:00pm, MIT Chapel
Enrollment limited: advance sign up required (see contact below)
Single session event
Prereq: Singing experience or ability to read music
Prior to Peter the Great, musicians in Russia had no contact with the music of Western Europe; they developed beautiful and unusual musical styles of their own. Although they are extensively quoted by Rachmanninov, these chants are not often heard today. In this workshop, we will learn and sing a selection of chant, polyphony, and kant from pre-Western Russia. No Russian language experience necessary! All voice parts are welcome. We will end the workshop with an open rehearsal in the MIT Chapel. Advance sign-up required for photocopying purposes
