Examines the role of representation in conceiving and producing design. Exposure to representational techniques including sketching, orthographic and paraline drawing, constructed perspective, collage, photography and video. Students develop an experimental method that allows them to use the media and techniques for inquiring into and communicating design. Required of and restricted to level one M.Arch. students.

This course will introduce the nature of parmametric modeling with digital tools, and is specifically intended as optional preparation for the Level III spring studio of Ann Pendleton-Jullian with Mark Burry. The course will focus on developing skill and understanding of the basic parametric software interfaces of the CATIA development environment. Lecture sessions will be complimented by seminar presentations of special topics. Enrollment is limited to 14 with priority given to those students lotteried into the AP-J studio.

Interactive interdisciplinary workshops which focus on projects and practices on urban settlement issues in developing countries throughout the world. Participation by guest practitioners.
The workshop in destroyed informal communities of Kabul. Returning families cannot rebuild without replanning of the settlement, and we will explore three scenarios: 1) replan area completely; 2) replan critical areas, partially maintaining original settlement pattern, and 3) maintaining original settlement pattern. Replanning will include design of core house starter units, efficacious land subdivision, infrastructure provision and a resettlement process. Najim Azadzoi, from Society of Afghan Engineers will be the main resource and UN-Habitat,will provide background material.
