The basics of djing will be taught in four weeks. Turntables and mixers will be provided, but we are expecting those who participate to purchase/bring cartridges, slipmats, headphones, and vinyl (to be discussed at the first class). How to Blow a Shofar

A shofar (ram's horn), one of the oldest instruments, has been used by Jews on special occasions since Biblical days. Hear about the horn's interesting history. Learn how to produce different sounds on the shofar, including the notes tekiah, teruah, and shevarim, used on the Jewish new year of Rosh Hashanah.

Come learn change ringing on the tower bells! Change ringing is the traditional British method of ringing bells, using mathematical permutations-as well as large bells controlled by one rope! No musical ability required. We will meet in Lobby 7 and catch the T to one of the towers in Boston.

An introduction to the traditional British way of ringing bells - change ringing. Because of the way the bells are hung in a church tower, we do not ring tunes, instead, we ring permutations in mathematical patterns. Come and try on handbells!

Middle Eastern Drumming Rhythms

This is an unusual opportunity for students to work with Melissa Edoh '02, List Foundation Fellowship Program recipient and members of MIT Rambax to learn and perform complex Senegalese rhythms. No prior drumming experience is required, just attendance at all sessions. Melissa has been studying under master drummer Lamine Toure in Cambridge, and also spent last summer in Senegal for intenstive study. Spaces limited--depending on the number of drums available, so sign up early. On Friday, January 31st, participants will perform in Killian Hall at 8pm.
