Be an animator! Rediscover the magic and pep of this delightfully elastic medium. Work with award-winning animator and designer Pell Osborn ("Piano-Forte", "Silent E", "The Creation") to build a free-for-all AniJam, an Animation Jamboree, in which each participant contributes a freeform sequence to our punchy final two-minute project. We'll use traditional materials -- each animator on a lightbox -- then capture our art to the computer for final edit and sync to a pre-recorded track. If all works out, our magnum opus screens at the MIT Media Spectacle this spring.

Learn your way around the darkroom: how to develop film and make a print.
Part 1: INTRO TO FILM DEVELOPING. Thery Mislick. Tues., Jan. 7th 6-9:30pm. Bring exposed, unprocessed roll of black-and-white film with you to class.
Part 2: INTRO TO B&W PRINTING. Dragan Grujic. Meets four Wednesdays starting Jan. 8th 6-9 pm. An introduction to basic B&W darkroom printing. Will cover making a contact sheet, use of variable contrast filters, dodging and burning, and toning. Students should bring their developed film and one 25 sheet package of Ilford Multigrade Delux RC 8x10 (or equivalent) paper.

The course culminates in the creation of original comics short features, written and drawn by each student.

Explore color and design with Majolica, a style of decoration imitating Chinese porcelain. The technique is to glaze earthenware/terracotta with an opaque white glaze, then "paint" colorful decorations on it. Students mix glazes and colorants.

With no lens, a pinhole camera is one of the most primitive tools for taking pictures. Pinhole images allow us to see as the eye and lens cannot.
