Margery Resnick, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages & Literature, will lecture on the subject, "Why No One Expected the Spanish Inquisition, But They Should Have." This is the first session of a three part series during the year that sets out to bring female faculty, staff, and students together.

Growing up, girls are not often afforded the opportunity to fix things. This is a four-week, hands-on course in which participants will learn the basics of electrical repair work around the home. Each session will build upon knowledge accrued in the previous classes, so attendance at all four is required. Topics will include: terminology and hands-on installation of plugs, circuits, switches, and light fixtures. Event co-sponsored by Women's Studies, the Edgerton Center, and Counseling and Support Services.

AMITA, the Association of MIT Alumnae, is sponsoring its annual "Life After MIT" event where students can network with MIT Alumnae. We will have informal roundtable discussions on a variety of topics including balancing a career and family, graduate school, entrepreneurship, and consulting. Current women students, both undergraduate and graduate, will have an opportunity to connect with alumnae and gain insight from their post-MIT experiences, challenges, and successes. Why are there declining birth rates in contemporary Europe, Japan and the US? Why are increasing numbers of women chosing to delay pregnancy or to refrain from it altogether?Is it by purely choice or is it in response to policies (maternity leaves, childcare, family benefits, etc.)? Mary Brinton, Margarita Estevez-Abe, Jytte Klausen, Anne McCants, and Martin Rein will discuss these issues. Co-sponsored by MISTI and Women's Studies. Rape Aggression Defense Training (RAD) provides basic information on personal safety, awareness, risk reduction, and avoidance. RAD teaches practical defensive techniques that require no special skills, helps women learn to be more aware of their surroundings, and gives participants the opportunity to test these learned skills on a real person during a simulated attack. Class fee of $20, payable to MIT, is due within THREE DAYS of registration. Registrants who cancel less than 48 business hours prior to class will not be eligible for a refund. Attendance is limited to the first 15 women with a payment. PE credits are available for students. SEE URL FOR DATES AND TIMES.
