In this class you will learn basic machine shop practice: layout, process planning, milling, drilling, turning, tool selection and grinding, measurement, and use of handtools (center punch, file, etc.). Save lots on the cost of comparable commercial loudspeakers by making your own. For beginners, design and construction from crossovers to enclosures are covered. Class includes 4 Tuesday classes about design, theory and building crossovers and 3 Thursday classes on how to build enclosures. About 10 hours additional time in shop will be needed to complete your speakers.

Chainmail Workshop

Chainmail is a flexible fabric constructed of linked metal rings, which has been used as a form of armor since ancient times. Learn how to make chainmail. All tools and materials will be supplied, but please bring needle-nose pliers if you have them.
The second week will include jewelry chainmail work. There is a $6 materials fee if you want to work in silver.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a simple, yet beautiful, book by hand? If so, please join the Preservation Services staff at the Libraries for a morning of creative pamphlet making. During the workshop, traditional techniques for folding pages, sewing pages together, and making a cover for a pamphlet will be introduced. We will provide a selection of blank text paper, decorated cover papers, and colored thread for participants to make two small pamphlets each.

renaissance shoemaking? Do you want to make your own medieval type shoes? Well, if the answer to either of those questions is "yes", come join the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) at a lecture on medieval shoemaking.
You will have a chance to practice sewing on leather, and will learn about the construction of shoes. Handouts are provided. In addition, the MIT SCA will be taking sign-ups for a low-fee ($5-10) shoemaking workshop to be held late IAP / early February - times and dates to be determined by participant preference.
