Authorship, Surveillance and Evaluation in the Design of Exhibition Spaces
Konstantinos Tsakonas, Bill Arning
Thu Jan 29, 10am-05:00pm, AVT 7-431

Single session event

In the design of exhibition spaces, there is often creative tension in claiming authorship of visitors' experience among three important contributors: the artist, the curator and the architect of the space. Furthermore, it is hard to ascertain the quality of the experience as methods for surveying visitors' behavior and evaluating the design of the exhibition space are still in their developmental infancy. The workshop accommodates artists, architects and curators as they discuss the current state of affairs, especialy in relation to the use of computer technology in the design, surveillance and evaluation of exhibition spaces.

Be a worthy contributor to Animation, the world's newest artform! We'll review some short, world-famous animations, then approach the artform the old-fashioned way, creating hand-drawn artwork on lightboxes, scanning it into the computer for looping, sound-sync and final edit. We'll use dynamic, energetic typography to illustrate one or two essential maxims (in ten words or less, yet to be chosen!), then add color and organic line to give them an unforgettable visual boost! Our finished piece, 2 to 3 minutes long, will screen at the Made-at-MIT Spectacular in May. Limit: 12. Presented by Pell Osborn, award-winning animator, designer, and teacher.

The sketch is the most expressive drawing; it is not meant to produce anything but one's own clarification. The sketch is a way of thinking, a way of seeing, and a way of understanding the physical world in which we operate. This course is grounded on the concept of understanding through doing. It is intended as a self-inquiry to develop the skills of the individual through a set of diverse sketching exercises, with an emphasis on the 3-dimensional analytical sketch. Basic 3D drawing techniques are introduced the first session, while other sessions focus on the art of 'seeing' and drawing by doing. Students requested to finance own materials and local travel. Please see activity web-site for signup and further information.
