In this class you will learn basic machine shop practice: layout, process planning, milling, drilling, turning, tool selection and grinding, measurement, and use of handtools (center punch, file, etc.). As time permits, we will also cover material properties, inspection techniques, and other pertinent issues. Build Your Own Loudspeakers

Fee: 200.00 for speaker materials and Hobby Shop membership
Save on the cost of comparable commercial loudspeakers by making your own. For beginners, design and construction from crossovers to enclosures are covered. Class includes 3 one hour lectures covering design, theory and building crossovers on Jan.12,14,16 from 2-3PM and 3 two hour classes on how to build enclosures Jan. 6,13,20 from 9-11AM. About 10 hours additional time in shop will be needed to complete speakers. Fee:$200/student $230/staff includes shop membership Register in shop between Dec. 1-19

CNC Lathe Demonstration

Ben Barrowes will demonstrate programming and running the Harrison Alpha CNC lathe in the MIT Hobby Shop. Starting with a dxf file the Alpha Plus software will create a tool path that runs the lathe automatically. Use of the lathe is open to members of the MIT community when they join the Hobby Shop. Register in the Hobby Shop after Dec. 1.
