Come and discover Aikido, which is a modern Japanese martial art that emphasizes blending with the attacker, rather than confronting the attacker with hard techniques such as punches and kicks.
Students of Aikido practice how to use their body and mind in a natural and optimally efficient way. Aikido includes many responses to different types of attacks including throws, holds, joint locks, pins, and disarming techniques.

American Jiu Jitsu Introduction to Self Defense Skills

We will focus on basic self-defense skills. Additional practice will be held on Saturdays from 3-6pm. This IAP we will be focusing on practical ground fighting skills; defense from knife, gun, and blunt-weapons; and multiple attacks. All classes are open to anyone within the MIT community who has an athletics card. IAP Classes are free for all participants. This series is designed for men and women without previous experience. Advanced classes are also offered.

Kyudo, or Japanese archery, means the "way of the bow". Kyudo is based on standing Zen meditation used by Zen Buddhist monks as a means of cultivating meditative awareness and as a path of self-realization. Beginners will receive instruction in the basic form of kyudo, the "Seven Coordinations," at a short-range target. Intermediate students will be able to shoot long-distance at 28 meters. This class builds on the skills taught in the general skating class. It is assumed that you will already know how to skate backwards and forwards. This class will improve your style of skating, and you will learn a variety of figure skating moves,including forward and backward edges, mohawk and three turns,spirals, lunges, spins, and a variety of jumps (bunny hops, waltz jumps, toe-loops, mazurkas, salchows, etc.). You must have figure skates (hockey skates are unsuitable for this class). Rentals are available at the rink.

This ARC course trains instructor candidates to teach Infant and Pre-school Aquatics Program, 7 levels of Learn to Swim Program, Community Water Safety, Water Safety Instructor Aide courses, and, for eligible individuals, Safety Training for Swim Coaches course. Minimum of age 16 by end of course. Includes Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) Prerequisite. Pretest includes 25 yards of the following: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Breaststroke, Sidestroke; and 15 yards Butterfly, 1 minute of treading water, 1 minute of backfloating at Red Cross level 4 or higher.
