Are you passionate about contributing to the public good through your research? This session is a chance for students to learn about Service UROPs - experiences that allow students to work on public service projects as part of their research and learning. Public service projects allow students to tackle a wide range of issues from poverty to racism to environmental degradation. Students will learn about how Service UROPs can be set up and how to find ideas for projects. A panel of representatives involved in public service research projects will talk about specific project ideas.

Bikes Not Bombs Building Session

Bikes Not Bombs is a nonprofit organization that refurbishes old bikes for use in community-building programs abroad and nearby (bikesnotbombs.org). We will be taking a small group of volunteers to repair and build bikes for them. No training or previous experience needed. Dress for the shop: clothes you don't mind getting very dirty/stained, closed-toed shoes, pull back long hair, etc.

Alpha Phi Omega is a national coed service fraternity, centered on the principles of leadership, friendship, and service. We do many exciting projects on and off campus. Come learn about us, do useful work for charity, and have fun with tools and bikes!

We'll discuss Saferide; crime mapping; streetlights; a bill we're supporting that expands access to information about campus crime problems; and a project started by students at another Cambridge-area university, called U-Cabs. Cat Shelter Building Session

The Cat Connection is a local nonprofit organization that helps feral (homeless) cats by providing shelters, as well as spaying and neutering; they were recently profiled in the Boston Globe. We will be helping by building and donating a cat shelter based on their blueprints. This will involve woodworking, so dress for the shop: clothes you don't mind getting sawdust all over, closed-toed shoes, pull back long hair, etc.

Information session on a service project of refining and installing an early warning system along the Rio Aguan in northern Honduras, completing a needs assessment of the villages served, and bringing educational and medical supplies to these flood-threatened communities. Silkscreening Open Project

Silk screening is a process for transferring painted images onto various mediums; we will be teaching how to silkscreen t-shirts by making several MIT-oriented designs to be sold for charity. Anyone who comes will have a chance to try it out, see how the process works, and have the first crack at some brand new shirts. We will make some "I Believe" (magnetic monopole) shirts, and possibly Visit Hell and MIT Dragon designs depending on turnout.

Three Decades of Squatter Dreams - Lima, Peru

Interactive interdisciplinary workshops which focus on projects and practices on urban settlement issues in developing countries throughout the world. Participation by guest practitioners.

In 1969 four squatter communities were surveyed in Lima, Peru: Cueva, El Ermitano, El Agustino, and Mendocita. It is now 25+years after: What happened? How did they manage? SIGUS will go to Lima in January to revisit these four settlements and explore these questions.

Note: Student participants wishing to receive credit for their IAP work must register for 4.230J/11.468J in Spring 2005.

This workshop is aimed specifically at Recycling Ambassadors and other environmental stewards @ MIT. We will discuss how to get the word out about recycling within your DLC, brainstorm around roadblocks to recycling and education, learn new skills to motivate others to practice sustainable behavior (eg. recycling) and share what has worked and what has not worked to increase recycling in specific areas. Lunch will be provided. With your RSVP, please include an example of a problem you are facing in your department so that it can be addressed in the course of the workshop.
