Constantine P. Cavafy was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1863 and died there in 1933. Together with Seferis and Elytis he is is the most famous Greek poet of the modern period. His style is direct, intense, and poised, as is his stance toward those who have loved, who have lost, who have endured for beauty's sake, and honor's.
