IAP 2005 Activity


American Jiu Jitsu Introduction to Self Defense Skills

Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)
Prereq: Eagerness to learn self-defense.

We will focus on basic self-defense skills. Additional practice will be held on Saturdays from 3-6pm. This IAP we will be focusing on practical ground fighting skills; defense from knife, gun, and blunt-weapons; and multiple attacks. All classes are open to anyone within the MIT community who has an athletics card. IAP Classes are free for all participants. This series is designed for men and women without previous experience. Advanced classes are also offered.

Introduction

We will introduce the skills class concept and begin with eye-hand coordination exercises. This class will focus on building reflex defenses from a striking attacker.

Blunt Weapon Defense I

We will introduce students to the use of blunt weapons (sticks, kubotans, ASPs, baseball bats, The CLUB, umbrellas, etc.) in self-defense.

Defense from the Ground

Saturday classes are grappling/ground-fighting skills classes. Please wear a gi if you have one. If not, make sure to wear comfortable clothes that will not tear easily (thick cotton shirts, sweat pants or shorts, etc.)

There is class on each Saturday except for on January 15.

Knife Defense Skills I

In this class, we will introduce students to the use of a knife as a self-defense tool. We will discuss the legalities of carrying and deploying knives and the extreme dangers involved with knife fights. Please wear dark clothes that can get dirty; we will be doing chalking exercises.

Gun Defense Skills I

We will go through several possible gun/robbery scenarios. This class will help students begin to develop the necessary mind-set and eye-hand coordination required to succesfully dissarm a gun-weilding assailant in close-proximity.
