Using new media and applied techniques, students will use both intuition combined with the act of making for inquiring about and communicating design intentions. Priority will be given to Course 4 undergraduates who have taken 4.101.

Interactive, interdisciplinary workshops that focus on projects and practices on urban settlement issues in developing countries throughout the world. Participation by guest practitioners.
Survey and documentation of a low-income housing project of 1976 that represented a paradigm shift in programs addressing urban poor. Now 30 years later, has the euphoria of this new approach been vindicated? Or, are we still searching for a viable housing strategy for the world's urban poor? SIGUS will go to Manila to explore these questions through survey of the settlement and interviews with experts from government agencies and NGOs. The material will provide a key resource in the World Urban Forum III in Vancouver, June 2006. Some costs borne by participants.

Computer-based analysis techniques used as a basis for design decisions are introduced in this course, with a focus on lighting and energy. Participants will be exposed to traditional performance metrics, such as daylight factor and avoidance of direct sunlight, and will also gain knowledge and practice in emerging metrics based on dynamic annual daylight simulations. Two days of formal instruction and hands-on exercises will be followed by a day during which participants will be able to apply the concepts learned to a design project of their choosing. This workshop will be open to students and practitioners.
