DMSE Graduate Medallion Casting

Come learn how to cast metal objects in the MIT foundry! Starting with a silicone rubber mold, we will form wax patterns, build ceramic shells, and cast beautiful silicon bronze medallions to be given to all graduates of DMSE, a tradition since 2001. If you have ever wondered how solid metal parts are actually made, and would like to learn the art (without all the science) of the casting process, then this class is for you! DMSE graduate and undergraduate students are especially encouraged to participate but anyone interested is more than welcome.

Introduction to Welding

Here's a chance to play with fire, make noise, and get dirty while exploring several techniques for joining various metals to one another. This 3 day course will cover gas (oxy-acetylene) welding as well as two or three methods of electric arc welding (stick, MIG, and, possibly, TIG) and the ancillary skills (cutting, grinding, measuring) that contribute to these processes. All necessary safety apparel will be provided. Two sessions will be offered, one on January 17, 19 & 24 either 9am to 12noon or 2pm to 5pm and again on January 26, 31 & February 2 either 9am to 12noon or 2pm to 5pm. Participants will choose either morning or afternoon sessions. Registration, which does not begin until Dec 1, will be only by e-mail to: trbashaw@mit.edu.

Using forges, hammers, and anvils, you'll have a hands-on opportunity to safely shape red-hot steel into useful, beautiful items. First meeting is mandatory for all participants (Wednesday, Jan 11, 9:00am-11:00am, Rm. 4-003). There will be three 2.5-hour sessions for each participant (9:00am-11:30am or 1:30pm-4:00pm); All safety equipment will be provided. Sign-up for these sessions will take place at the first meeting. Night Tour and Observing at the George R. Wallace Jr. Astrophysical Observatory

Come tour the heavens at MIT's Wallace Astrophysical Observatory located 45 minutes northwest of Boston in Westford MA. Use various telescopes from 14" to 24" for both visual observing and electronic imaging of Mars, Saturn, and other celestial bodies. Transportation will be provided for 24, up to 10 additional people can attend if they can provide their own transportation. Tour is scheduled for January 13th, but will run on the 14th in case of poor weather. Exact evening times will be distributed via e-mail before the event, but expect 6PM - 11PM to cover the full time. Participants will be notified by e-mail. Remember to dress warmly.
