Designing Telematic Sculpture for Mediated Conversation

We have been commissioned to create a set of telematic sculptures that will be publicly exhibited as part of the the ISEA festival in San Jose in August 2006. These human scale artworks will exist in a cafe where they will enable remote users to communicate with patrons of the cafe.

This course will explore the design of these telematic sculptures. We will cover topics including facial cognition, non-linguistic speech components, and expressive animation. We will create prototypes of several designs, including the remote interface used to control them, the physical design of the sculpture, and its interactive components.

This studio will introduce students to fundamentals of interactive toy design and introduce basic design techniques and principles. Students will build several toy prototypes in this class. We will review of related theory from the fields of design, fine art, education and cognitive science, and focus on fast ideation and implementation of ideas. Some readings related to design and learning will be required, but the majority of the course will be spend doing hands-on building. To get in three full weeks, we will start the first day of IAP, so those planning to take the IAP class should be able to be on campus for all of IAP.

Mandala Making: From Rock to River

This workshop will be the first in a series of events for Mandala Project 2006 - Aesthetics, Contemplation and Education. This project will be an outreach effort to the Cambridge community to promote meditation and hope for a better world. Walking through the hallways here at MIT, you are confronted by hundreds of posters, promoting a multitude of events and opportunites. What you choose to look at and perhaps act on depends, in large part, on how well the message came across. A well-designed poster can capture your audience and is effective in its intent.

In this class we will learn how basic elements such as font choice, type size, artwork, color, and copy contribute to a poster that either sings or doesn't. We will take a visual tour of posters from earlier times to the present, as well as design a few samples, based on what we learn in class.

Learn to combine animation, video, and sculpture in a three-dimensional space using techniques perfected by Boston artist Andy Zimmermann. Sessions will cover the process of merging projections with sculptural objects and surfaces to make unified, meaningful artistic installations. Previous computer-based animation and video experience is helpful, but not necessary. Course instructor Andy Zimmermann's multimedia installation, "Cars and Stars," will be on exhibit at the MIT Museum through February 24, 2006.

New format--each Saturday session is a workshop!! Introduction to digital image capture and techniques without losing photography as an art form. Light and its controls will be demonstrated and practiced. Class members' technical skills will be individually enhanced to a minimum professional level. Participants will choose and complete a common class topic. The results will be critiqued. The digital capture workflow will be examined and the goal is for each participant to produce a portfolio. Each participant must bring a DSLR (Nikon or Canon) to each workshop. The images will be printed at the end of each session. Fee is $59 to cover the cost of printing and creating a portfolio.
