Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)

A four-part interactive seminar exploring the lives and poetry of four Soviet poet women: Tsvetaeva, Akmatova, Alilueva and Yarovaya. We will learn about the repression of their art by the Soviet regime and afterwards discuss what it means to be free. We will read selected works by each woman to explore how their desire for freedom, both political and personal, influenced their work.

Do IT Zone
Alex Slocum
Tue Jan 10, Thu Jan 26, 05-07:00pm, Lobdell Hall

No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Participants requested to attend all sessions (non-series)
Prereq: Just be psyched!

MIT is a haven for people who like to turn ideas into reality, but facilities are scattered. Imagine if there was a zone in which stuff could be created so ideas, tools, and methods could be shared. The Do IT Zone would exist in the combined basement (with natural light from the sides!) of the student center and a new building between the student center and Mass Ave. The upper floors could contain an MIT visitor center, a theatre, café, student group offices. The Do IT Zone must evolve from student needs. Teams are invited to self form and create their vision for the Do IT Zone. Teams can work on the layout of just one single work cell, such as the ideal painting room, the layout of an entire 2500 m^2 basement work zone area, or the design of the entire building.

Eastern Slavs: Paganism and Modern Life
Kate Anderson
Tue Jan 17, 02-04:00pm, 24-619

No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Single session event

Christianity was adopted in the Eastern Slavic territory around 10th century A.D. and struggled with paganism for several centuries. But though Christianity won, there are quite a lot of pagan remains even in modern life. We will study an Eastern Slavic wedding, focus on pagan symbols and signs and their meaning, and the meaning of color. You'll be able to compose a pattern of pagan symbols having a certain meaning, and explain it. Finally, you'll be treated to traditional Slavic (primarily Russian) food, with recipes that go back to pagan times.
