A chance to build the 1-Bit Groovebox. I will have a number of kits available for a $20 studio fee for us to construct them. If you can bring a soldering iron, do so, it will make things go more quickly. If you have any custom parts you would like to use, such as special knobs, switches, or case, bring those.
Funded in part by a Director's Grant from the Council for the Arts at MIT.

Musical Composition Through Dissonance and Synthesis
Noah Vawter
Wed Jan 18, 01-05:00pm, Rm135 Media Lab E15
No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Single session event
A computer music experiment...how it can be viewed as a series of varying levels of consonance and dissonance. Each of us will write a melody or brief song using only relative dissonance values- no notes!- and listen to each other's sequences.
I'll explain and demo a little about dissonance. I'll use software that generates sounds whose pitch is arbitrary, but dissonance level is very precise. Then, we'll all try melodies and software settings.
Expect a laid back, participatory atmosphere. If you can, bring your laptop so we can work in parallel. Expect to hear unusual music. If you're a musician, expect to return with unusual samples. If you really know what you're doing, write a synthesis method besides a melody. Maybe we will put up a page of our mp3s!
