MIT Outing Club Winter School

Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)
Prereq: none

Introduction to self-propelled wilderness winter travel. Two nights per week of lecture, plus trips every weekend for people who have been to the classes (rental gear available). Topics progress from daytrips to winter camping and mountaineering; will cover food, clothing, travel by snowshoes, crampons and skis, ice climbing and more. All levels of experience welcome. Note: Attendance at the first two lectures and the first Saturday's skills day in New Hampshire are mandatory for participation in winter trips!

Introduction and Essential Skills for Winter Trips

Introduction to winter school. Topics include winter weather, and basic day trip clothing, gear, food and water. We will also discuss how to buy what you need cheaply, including what are the essentials as well as effective substitutes.

Snow Gadgets

Topics include winter driving, winter safety and emergency response, and winter gear (backpacks, crampons, snow shoes, ice axes). Gear techniques (backpacks: packing, fitting, appropriate load; crampons: french technique, front pointing; etc.) will be discussed in preparation for Saturday’s skills day.

Skills Day

Practice of critical mountaineering skills on the grounds surrounding the MITOC Camelot cabin. Stations will include self-arrest, crampon techniques, packing for winter travel, orientiering, stoves, and tents. Participants should come with full day-packs and dress to be outdoors all day.

Participants are welcome to stay overnight at the cabin in preparation for Sunday hikes.

Focus is on overnight basics including food, stoves, tents, sleeping, women’s issues, and leave-no-trace policies. Winter trail ambiguity and white-outs will be discussed including an introduction to orienteering.

Topics include above treeline travel, self-arrest, and ice climbing. The lecture will conclude with a lesson on cross-country skiing techniques, followed by a discussion of special knowledge important for backcountry skiing.
