What goes into the design of a building? Why do buildings look different from region to region? Who will use this building? Why is drawing not only fun, but important?
The class will be exploring these questions through short design exercises. Working with many different media, students will discover the interrelationship of architecture and its related disciplines, such as structures, sustainability, history and the visual arts. Each problem will focus on one of these disciplines and one exploration and presentation technique.
Students will create additions to modernist structures, guest houses that operate off the grid in remote locations and places to experience art.
Meets Tues.-Thurs. 10-12 and 2-5; Fri. 12-5

Focuses on drawing from observation and explores a range of non-digital media. Instead of clicking a mouse and typing commands, students will pick up charcoal and draw. Exercises use still life arrangements as well as the human figure (nude models), and include gesture drawing, composition and interior perspective from observation. Charcoal and oil pastel, India ink and acrylic paint will be used. The goal of the course is to give students a broad range of drawing techniques that can be applied to their studio work. Open to Course 4 undergraduates having taken 4.101. Preference will be given to sophomores and juniors. No previous drawing experience is required. Limited to 15 students; send email with name, year and contact information to ahwill@mit.edu by Dec. 6.
