Gum printing permits a high degree of artistic expression as each practitioner can personalize his technique to best suit his needs. This class will cover all aspects of gum process: paper preparation, negative preparation, and the printing itself. Students bring three to five black and white prints to the first class session; these images will be scanned and an ink-jet negative will be produced. The ability to produce a representation of space both believable and potentially inhabitable is a goal of architectural and artistic representation. Utilizing motion graphics to create 3D space out of 2D moving imagery is our focus. We will demonstrate After Effects, a motion graphics program for video compositing, then explore how this program is used for parsing of spatial paradigms, from the sculptural, to the filmic and architectural. Next we will explore spatial paradigms thru a series of hands-on exercises. The third day combines these exercises to cohere a new spatial construct beyond the accumulation of each exercise. We conclude with presentations and analysis of the projects.

The workshop will string together reef ecology, Mongolian craft, art & industry, and the notion of utopia. You will see four films (maybe 5), go on two field trips (one to an aquarium and one to a museum) make a pair of wool felt shoes and read at least one manifesto. In keeping with the model of sponge reproduction, you will leave the workshop prepared to lead a SPONGE of your own.

Light is the focus of this two day workshop—how it stimulates visual experiences of space and how spatial experiences may be shaped through the careful handling of optical effects. The first day of the workshop will be devoted to demonstrations and guided explorations, drawing from the Museum's holography collection for "informational light tools" that demonstrate the manipulation of light for stimulating 3-D space experiences. The second day will focus on hands-on work through individual projects using basic light sources, optics and optical materials. We'll learn how to work with light as a structural medium of perception and to approach the design of space as choreography of visual experiences. Brief presentations and analyses of the projects will complete the workshop.
